7 Lessons traveling teach me about relationship

Rabu, 26 November 2014 0 komentar

Being said, one of the keys to happiness is having a good relationship. Not only lovey-dovey relationship with boyfriend, but generally for people around us - family, relatives, best friends, just friends, even a stranger.

Meanwhile, one of my happiness comes from traveling. To feel my life is moving, to meet someone who later I call family, missing home, finding a new home, and seize the moment.

Just like any relationship, not all travel stories turn out into great memories. It sucks when I found out my flight cancelled due the snow storm while I had a convention to catch up next morning. I was devastated when my Dad was sick and I had to make a sudden change to return back home. But after the sh*t happened, I learned something. Something I might not realize until I travel.

Let's Travel, Let's be happy
I remember vividly, when my family went to road trip, It was a rush decision. My dad said it in the morning and within few hours, we embarked to the neighbor city only to find...Nothing. Yeah we didn't managed it well, only go to the certain place based on what my Dad heard, no research, no plan A plan B, no idea which way to take. Along the trip, my Mom felt uncomfortable being nowhere, in the middle of jungle and wanted to just go back home. My Dad persisted we're on our way. Me and my little sisters decided not to give any comment and just surrender followed by Dad whom also frustrated.

In the end of the day, I learned something just like this quote :

"A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it"
-John Steinback

But, hey life (traveling & relationship) always has its ups and downs. It is surely like dancing in the rain (storm, I might say). I experienced it, I learned from it. That's why I'm so in love with traveling, because whenever I'm on the road, I find a piece of life-lessons about relationship.

1. You can't make people happy if you're not happy.

Traveling : When you traveling, you are planning to have a good time. With or without travel-mates. Yeah, by being with them you are not alone, you have friends to share the hostel room with, you have someone take your picture, etc but they cannot bring out the happiness in you if you're always the one that has to surrender on where to go next.

Relationship : People said when you love someone, his/her happiness is yours too. Seeing the smile on their face is the payback for your efforts. But then you are forgetting that you also want and need to smile as well. I used to make everyone happy, so I can feel that I fit with them, I feel belong to the group. I follow them to do many things so I can claim I'm theirs. They are happy, I'm miserable. This will not end until you stop and asking yourself, what are you doing? What do you want? What makes you happy? For me, it’s just as simple as you can’t feed someone if you're starving.

2. You can't rely your happiness on others.

Traveling : You dream to go to Thailand. You made the itinerary with your friends. You saved up money like crazy. You booked the ticket and only to find out your travelmate cancelled it due to work. You scared out of hell thinking walking alone in the busy road of Bangkok. Sadly you cancelled the flight and live up thinking "What If" for the rest of your life.

Relationship : Don't ever think "I'll be happy if he changed." The reality is he would never changed. He might grow and become a better person, but it's also for the sake of himself. So why do you invest your happiness on him rather on yourself? Only you who can answer it.

3. Everything should be balance.

Traveling : Say, you treat your friend for lunch. One time, two times, or third times is fine. Maybe she or he is having a financial problem. The bottom line is this is not about how much money you spend on them, but the concept of taking and giving. If they couldn’t pay it with dollar, they can still offer it with nice gesture, a thank you card and a simply smile from heart.

Relationship : If you're the one who always say "Good Morning" first, forget it. If you're the one who always calls first, forget it. If you're the one that always say "I'm sorry" to make situation better, forget it. If you think you can always give something for your love one, you are wrong. This is not a healthy relationship.

4. Don't take something for granted.

Traveling : So from the points above, don’t take/give something for granted.

Relationship : So you see how difficult it is to find someone who is worth enough to keep, someone who is worth fighting for? If you happen to have one or some, lucky you. Treat them nicely, spend time with them, don't hesitate to let them know how much it means for you. For tomorrow, no one knows and you better cherish the moment.

4. Be present, content.

Traveling : You own the smartphone, not the vice versa. Don't be busy to take selfies to show off on your instagram and so you missed the chance to interact with the locals and at the end of the journey you don't know what it is all about.

Relationship : It is common nowadays to see a couple communicates more by social media rather than having a face to face conversation or when you have family gathering, everyone seems busy tweeting and you forget to ask how is your grandfather or grandma doing? You never know when it is the last time for you to see him or her again.

5. Stop comparing yourself with others.

Traveling : All you can afford is the 3D2N backpacking to Thailand. While your friend get an exclusive tour to Turkey. I know how it feels. Envy is a common thing but don't make it your best friend. The quality of the trip has nothing to do with destination.

Relationship : You wish your family not torturing you with the questions such as "When will you are ready to settle down?", and you wish everyone mindstheir own d*mn business and stops to generalize the standard of happiness.

6. Say No, when you mean it.

Traveling : You fed up with Mexican restaurant every time your travel mate point it out for lunch. You nodded but you are screaming inside you. Why dont you say No and give the reason while finding solutions or alternatives. I bet your travel mate wont be so stubborn and they can be open enough to try different cuisine.

Relationship : You say yes every time to make people happy? See this is gonna be like evil cycle (see again point no 1)

7. Yourself comes first.

I sound like a self-centered person, individualistic, you name it. But that is true. Repeat after me:Yourself comes first.

I usually dont do selfie, unless the place is remarkable or I dont have someone to help me capture the moment. I have been go through thousand of pictures while I was in the states and every time I see this selfie, It made me stop, smile and blessed to be able to travel in USA.

So here we go my top 14 selfies during 10 months in states (random time):

1. Buffalo - New York

I was so happy for my first time seeing snow fall from the sky. After 5 minutes, I freeze and went back inside the house and found out my flight had been cancelled due the snow storm. Ughh!
2. Arizona

After watched UP movie, I was obsess to ride hot air balloon and here I am flying in the middle of Sonoran desert watching Saguaro cactus and having picnic afterward with my best friends. Dream came true!

This is not looks like I was in Grand Canyon. LOL

Located in mesa, Acoma Pueblo is the oldest inhabit village of native american. They dont have water, gas, electricity facilities but life is good for them.

In front of St.Louis Cathedral - Jackson Square and found the banana tree in USA!

Only in Indonesia

Senin, 08 September 2014 0 komentar

I have been travel abroad few times and then coming home just to realized how beautiful each one of those countries. Nothing is more fascinating than to see how each one of them live their life. It broaden my horizon knowing my definition of normal might be interpreted abnormal from people across the globe and vice versa. Some people have such a complex way of live just to preserve their culture. Some has a modern life, leaving their root behind and some just struggle in between. Everyone is different.

Nonetheless to say, Indonesia is among the top of beautiful country with a lot of potential in any sectors. Tourism, education, society, etc - you name it. Indonesia has been known for its rainforest, white sandy beach, amazing sunset and abundant volcanoes. As an Indonesian myself, I used to take granted something around me until destiny brought me abroad and and missed it from far away. Some things does turn more beautiful, delicious, precious like this below.... when you lose it.

1. Street food is more delicious rather than restaurant.
In general, I can say street food taste the same if not better than the food in restaurant especially when it comes to Indonesian food. In jambi, I will never ever eat meatball in shopping center or restaurant. I better find it in small stall with affordable price and ended up with a happy tummy. The only concern about street food is the hygiene issue. For the newcomer, take it slowly and always look out how they serve food, cook and wash the dishes. You'll be surprised of how strong Indonesian stomach and how weak/sensitive your stomach.

Chicken Noodle + Ice Tea seller.
2. Speed bump every 5 meters
Level up your driving skills by strolling to narrow street or crowded neighborhood and feel the bump. The speed bump is not built by government, but the community or the owner of the house in the front of the street. Some of the speed bump made of big rope, cement or wood. In Indonesia it is known as lying police as it function as a guardian to watch vehicles not to speed up and hopefully there will be no accident especially with the kids.

3. Ojek.
One of the things I miss from Indonesia is how easy breazy I could commute to anywhere. Forget about walking miles and miles because you can't afford taxi. In Indonesia, I cant rely on public transportation, but ojek (private chartered motorcycle) has been an unofficial public transportation. Usually available in their stop as crossroad in the street or in the front of residency, there you can find ojek with their colourful vest and sometimes donated by one of the political figures. A skill to bargain is needed but even though it is a little bit expensive but relatively safe and fast to get you where you have to.

4. Komodo, the only living dragon in the world located in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.

6. Rafflesia Arnoldii, the largest flower in the world. The diameter of the flower can reach 1 meter. Can be found in Bengkulu, Sumatera Island.

Rafflesia Arnoldii

5. Junior and Senior high school graduation celebrated with massive signing name and signature in the school uniform. They left behind the one that didn't pass the final test and hit the road and do their own carnival. If you see this group, be aware of traffic jam that might occur and dominating street as they think the road belongs to them.

6. When you see people put the pants around his/her neck, you know they are measuring to see whether it fit them or not. Still practice in mostly small city in Indonesia. PS : not reliable but believable for some.

7. Wedding in Indonesia is like no other places. For some parents, wedding is a graduation for them to raise their kids until now and they take it as a pride. Of course, they will love to have a big wedding with hundred people coming and shake their hand saying "Congratulation, you did great." In Indonesia, it is polite to give something (usually money in envelope) for the newly weds or if not a big-flowery sign to congratulate them. To make sure people come and wait until the last agenda, they offered gift,  music, dance and sometimes door prize. There are usually two kinds of wedding in Indonesia, first traditional one and second the international one. The traditional wedding depend on the family's race/religion/culture and can be more expensive than international wedding which is adapted from eastern culture with white long wedding dress, kissing bride (kids close your eyes!), toss champagne, cutting 5 feet cake and throwing banquet.

8. Book price is sometimes not affordable for people that enjoys reading. They have to come up with the idea to solve this problem which resulting in many people visit Gramedia (the largest bookstore chain in Indonesia) and read it there for free or borrow it from book stall. The book stall offered rent for as low as Rp.1.000 (USD 10 cent) for a comic. Yeah some people dont read text-book or heavy book yet for leisure.

9. Parking officer is the private sector job that comes from nowhere. I think several parking officers dont have the permit to re tribute the money but still they are acting as professional. Even though it is a cheap price (usually motorcyle = 1,000 IDR, car =2,000 IDR) but If they litterally just collect without helping anything, this is really annoying.

10. Traditional method to cure illness. We do believe in scientific and health industry. But we just so curious to find out is there any way cheaper, faster, without side effects that can work as good as the doctor's prescription? We need to be creative. That is why black magic, acupuncture, kerok, bekam, jamu, shinse are still the first thing to cross our mind when you think your body's not well.

Some list above might be showing not-a-good-side of Indonesia and need to be fixed but it shaped Indonesia as a place we called home. Admit it!

What else you can think of? Please share with us.

4 Must Visit Places in New Orleans

Jumat, 27 Juni 2014 0 komentar

One night after attending a full day convention in New Orleans Marriott Hotel, me and my fellow headed to Bourbon street for some refreshments. It was nights before Halloween day, made everything crazier than it already was. The road was closed because there was too much people on the sidewalk and street performances took place in the middle of the road. One of the street performances made me stop walking.

It was an African - American group wearing white clothes performing a modern dance mixed with break dance. The audience seemed to enjoy the performance until one of the men stopped the music.

"Hey..yo  your money will keep us away from two things. The homeless shelter and your house." He said.

The crowd laughed out loud , thinking it was a funny joke and started throwing dollars. Everyone was happy and they continued as the night was still young.

------

The city, New Orleans was at one time the largest slaves market in the country. That is one of the things that was surprised me, of how big the African-American population over there was. If I am used to the Hispanic population back in Arizona, in here I can find African-American in every corner of New Orleans.

The French called New Orleans the 46th largest city in USA as La Nouvelle-Orleans. Americans call it The Big Easy or N'awlins. In this city that never sleeps, or at least made my friend and me didn't sleep, here are the top 4 places you should not missed :

New Orleans, Louisiana

1. Bourbon street
I think New Orleans get a title of "the city that never sleeps" from Bourbon Street because this is a particular place for drinking and party persons. I'm not that type of person, but watching people got drunk and threw up might be the precious experience I want to embrace. While walking in the street passing houses that have two stories, I looked up and saw some people called from upstairs and tried to encourage girls who were walking in the street to open their shirt showing their boobs. If you do that, you can get free colorful necklace made in China. Are you brave enough?

2. French Quarter
It is well known as the birthplace of Jazz. In this oldest neighborhood of New Orleans, you can easily find pubs with many great musician and people waiting in line even before the sun disappear. For the music lover, you really belong to this place. And for the food lover, you should never ever miss to try sugar-dusted, doughy beignets from Cafe du Monde. Just a tips, don't think about eating in the place, just take it away and enjoy to eat it in Jackson Square. It is worth 15 minutes than being stuck in never ending line.
French Quarter

3. Jackson Square
It is located in the heart of French Quarter. This historic place is facing Missisipi river and it is the place where I first saw banana tree in USA. I was so surprised and it was located in front of St. Louis Cathedral. Another attraction for me was seeing many local artists hang their paintings in the iron fence around this area, drew people on the spot, tarot players and palm readers showing off their talent.

St. Louis Cathedral Jackson Square
4. Mississippi River
This iconic river is the fourth longest river in the world (3,710 miles/5,970km). Enjoy the chilly day by walking in the river bank or chill down taking cruise along the river by steamboat.
